CONSTRUCTION GUIDE

PRELIMINARY GRADING

Remove all topsoil, excavate to approximate grade (pitch shall be 1% in one direction preferably with the game) and ideally allow to set for approximately 3 to 6 months.  Cut and fills over 3' should be prepared 1 year in advance.  (If sub-base cannot be allowed to weather naturally, sub-base should be mechanically compacted.)

FINE GRADING

Shall take place just prior to sub-base placement, 1% pitch in one direction.  Fine grading to be + or - 1/2" with laser grading equipment.  Fine grading should be thoroughly compacted by means of rolling.

DRAINS

If required by poor drainage, a 4" drain pipe is installed, back-filled with 3/4" clean stone, 12" to 24" in depth.  Drains should be designed to run from high side to low side.  Perimeter drains can be considered to handle surface and subterranean water flow if it is a concern.  Area around the court should be properly contoured to help control surface runoff.

SUB-BASE

4" to 6" of ¾" to 1 ½" QP stone blend (quarry processed stone), laser graded and compacted

BASE ASPHALT

2" minimum of stabilized base (Base) asphalt installed with laser controlled paving equipment and properly compacted.  If poor soil conditions exist, base thickness to be increased accordingly, 3" to 4", and properly compacted.

PATCHING

Patch if required.  Patching of base asphalt to remove low areas lessens chance of birdbaths in final surface.  This procedure is not necessary if laser paved.

SURFACE COURSE

1 ½" minimum of a fine asphalt (Top) installed with laser controlled paving equipment and properly compacted with a 4 ton minimum roller.  Final paving should run with the game (pave same direction as the game will be played).

PLAYING SURFACE

Multiple coats of a combination of asphalt and acrylic emulsions to seal, smooth, and provide a durable weather resistant surface (refer to Surface Guide).
